Five tips for upgrading your vehicle's power plant to improve its fuel economy and overall performance! 1. Replace the car's air filter regularly. This can be done by changing out the old filter for a new one or by simply vacuuming it with a vacuum cleaner that has two small attachments that are designed to fit into the air filter inlets. A dirty filter can cause your engine to run roughly and suffer from lower fuel economy, as well as damage the catalytic converter. It also may trigger some warning lights on your dashboard, such as those pertaining to emissions control systems or low coolant levels. 2. Change the spark plugs and wires. Sometimes, a factory-issued spark plug may go bad and cause your engine to turn off as it reaches the ignition zone. If this happens, simply remove the old spark plug and replace it with a known-good plug from another vehicle. If you fail to check the specified gap on these plugs, you could end up with problems that can be costly or dangerous. Also, if your car has distributor cables that use an "S" connector for fuel injection, you should invest in a set of new cables and connectors. 3. Change out your air-conditioning unit's evaporator coil(s). An evaporator coil has a standard design. As a result, when it ages, the air-conditioning unit will lose its cooling efficiency. Aftermarket units from ACDelco can be purchased to replace this aging part for a fraction of what the original unit cost. In addition, they are built to last longer and require less maintenance than the factory-installed units. 4. Replace the catalytic converter with one of higher chrome content. Aftermarket catalytic converters typically provide better engine protection and up to 20 percent more fuel economy than their original counterparts that come with your car's engine. Rather than replacing the entire exhaust system, however, they can be used to replace the OEM converter. 5. Always use the recommended grade of premium gasoline. This will minimize your engine's carbon build-up and prevent any carbon deposits from blocking its fuel injectors and spark plugs. Using a higher quality of premium fuel will even help your engine turn more oxygen into horsepower and torque and generate less pollution and harmful emissions. If you think you may not obtain the high octane level necessity with the right octane rating, you can obtain an octane booster such as those made by STP or Gumout for a couple dollars per quart bottle at any automotive store. The bottle should state their purpose clearly. 6. Replace your tires to improve your vehicle's handling potential rather than waiting for the treads to wear down completely. These tires can be safe-to-drive for up to 40,000 miles after they are replaced, depending on what type of car it is. High-performance vehicles are lucky in this regard because they have special suspension systems designed to handle extreme stress on their tires through high speeds or when racing down the road. The quicker you replace these worn out tires, the safer you will be when driving down the road in your car, truck or SUV. 7. cfa1e77820
